Great battling britons, batman, it’s a comic in progress

Back off the plane from the UK:

And very nearly getting to the end of the Boudica comic…nothing like a deadline panic to motivate me. Things are shaping up beautifully on the book generally, with stories coming in from all over the world. We’ve set up a home for this project, which we’ve titled Tales of the Spiffing.  Take a look at at talesofthespiffing.blogspot.com to see what the artists are up to!

Boudica: Some Druids have a bad night

Nearing the halfway stage on my story now, this is page 2. I feel like I’ve got some tweaking to do on my colors, so this is still WIP. I’ve added a thumbnail to show you how badly I draw when I’m trying to plan the story. But it doesn’t matter. Roughs are for thinking, not for looking at.  Nobody sees them…Except you, of course.

And here’s an Iceni bad boy, taking a break between bloodbaths:

Luis Cook, Director of the Acclaimed Short The Pearce Sisters (and also uber painter) is nearing completion on the cover, and boy is it PURTY. Hope to show you soon.

Aardman comic project gathers pace

Hey there, It’s been a while. How are you?

Really? Damn.

Anyway, I thought I’d share something cool with you. Early this year, along with fellow story artist Ashley Boddy at Aardman, I floated the idea of a comic anthology done by Aardman artists. That project is now trundling inexorably toward deadline time [yikes]- but it’s in super shape with got some fantastic artists on board: Kris Pearn, head of story on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Matt Jones, arch sketchtraveller extraordinaire and now pixar guy, plus a raft of talent from Aardman’s directors and crew. It’s going to be a peach.

Of course, I’m scarily behind schedule on my piece, a retelling of the story of Queen Boudica. I thought I’d show you some character development art. I hope to post more as we trundle to crunch time.

Our New Duck and Cover Comic hits the printers

And if I say so myself, it’s good. 916 cups of coffee, four arguments, and one case of repetitive strain injury has all resulted in the second issue of our Comics collaboration Duck and Cover. Which is mostly a post apocalyptic comedy concerning mutant animals, but also looks at the human being and how silly we are. Or in this case, were.

And so after the frankly painful process of making it we’re printing the thing and launching it at the festival of comics and animation in Tel Aviv next week- so if you’re over here, come and say hi. We’ll be there, hanging out and I’m planning to do some live digital painting.

We’ve ramped up the process somewhat as three of us have worked on this, so I thought it might be interesting for you to see how three people work together to make it. But first, here’s a few preview pages. Characters are by the annoyingly talented Mysh, Layouts Oren Mashkovski, BG’s me, colors, all of us. Boarding and thumbs: all of us.

Oh, and there’s no speech bubbles- Didn’t want to give anything away just yet….

Duck and Cover comic art

I’m frantically wrapping up some boards for work before leaving for Italy tomorrow. Although the way things are going I’ll be doing boards in a hotel room in Rome tomorrow night. Which (if only for one evening), sounds kinda romantico. So before I leave I’m putting up some new Duck and Cover art, which is going into a pitch bible for the project.

I’m looking forward to Florence and I’m ready to cram my sketchbook with new work.  I’ll post as I go.

Adios,

Death from above, page 2

4a

Page two gets ink and colour. I’m still finding my feet with technique, and how I want colours and strokes to work with this particular project.  We’ll see how I end up! 4 more to go.
