Shaun the Sheep

Mid 2005, Aardman started developing a TV series based on the hit character Shaun the Sheep from Wallace and Gromit’s A Close Shave. Faced with the prospect of shooting huge amounts of animation on a tight schedule, they put out an internal competition for storyboarders and directors to handle the first 40 episodes. Happily I got through and joined the first series as a story artist before going on to direct. Below is my favorite episode. This show was my film school. Faced with the challenges of economy and a very limited world, we had a ton of fun and manged to insert a rich vein of grown up ideas and humor that hopefully doesn’t undermine the playfulness. And it continues! We just wrapped on series 2. All content © Aardman Animations

This was an informational short created for a Photoblogging service called Picapp. The premise was to describe how you can use their photos to improve your blog, and blog visits, so we pitched the blogosphere as a as a city populated by bloggers vying for attention. I art directed this piece for Monkey Business, a design firm in Israel. We opted for a lo-fi 60’s schlock collage effect. I think it worked. Story and Animation by Mashko.

Adrenalin Lemmings

Here’s a test I directed for ‘Adrenalin Lemmings’, a project I created with Alex Orrelle of crew972. They came out of some rough sketches I drew about 4 years ago. I was trying to come up with something funny about koalas, but got distracted by drawing lemmings with crash helmets on in the background. So I thought it best to run with that, because koalas aren’t exceptionally funny anyway.

The concept follows the activities of these four ambitious but idiotic lemmings as they use the urban jungle for their own perilous ends. It got picked up by a studio, and then got released back to crew972 again as their slate got cancelled. We’re hoping somebody out there will give them a home before they explode.

The test was fun to shoot- we did it fast and dirty with a cheap camcorder, and a few health and safety infringments, hanging out of the side of the car.

Irma’s Car

I directed/designed this little piece at Crew972. One of the many trials of Irma, a large lady struggling with modern life.
Techniques: Maya 3d, Flash character, AE comp.
